The painting, dating from around 1598 depicts Maffeo Barberini, who later became Pope Urban VIII.

The painting was bought by the Italian state from a private collection after a year of negotiations, and will now enter the permanent collection of Rome's Palazzo Barberini.

The purchase is part of wider plans to prevent major artworks from being bought by private collectors.
