The Israeli military announced on February 28 that it had killed seven people, including Commander Pakpour, the head of Iran's elite military unit, the Revolutionary Guard. The announcement stated that the Israeli military launched the attack after identifying Iranian officials gathered in several locations in Tehran. Among the seven killed is said to be Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Khamenei on security matters.
Pakpour was appointed after his predecessor Hossein Salami was one of several key military figures killed in an Israeli strike during the war in June 2025.
