Pope Benedict XVI Reversed Punishment for Portuguese Friar Accused of Abuse
In 1991, the future Pope Benedict XVI (then Cardinal Ratzinger) reversed a symbolic punishment for a Portuguese friar who had abused a girl, allowing him to continue contact with children. The friar had initially been barred from hearing confessions.
