EU sets first criteria for carbon removal activities

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 20 - The European Commission this week adopted the first set of criteria to certify activities that contribute to the permanent removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere. As Brussels recalled in a statement, the certification framework will remain voluntary. The rules adopted cover three types of activities: direct air capture with carbon storage, capture of biogenic emissions with carbon storage, and carbon removal through biochar. Once the framework enters into force, carbon removal projects using these activities will be able to apply for EU certification. The delegated regulation will now be transmitted to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU for a scrutiny period.
