(ANSA) - ROMA, 20 FEB - The Chairman of the Foreign and Community Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Giulio Tremonti, visited Sofia on Monday and Tuesday at the invitation of Confindustria Bulgaria. This was the Chairman's first visit to the Balkan country. The Italian ambassador to Sofia, Marcello Apicella, welcomed Mr. Tremonti by organizing a meeting with representatives of the Italian national system in Bulgaria (Italian Cultural Institute in Sofia, ICE Agency - Sofia Office, Italian Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria, and Confindustria Bulgaria) and with the ambassador-designate of the Republic of Bulgaria to the Italian Republic, Ivan Kondov. "The meeting provided Mr. Tremonti with a detailed overview of Italy's presence in Bulgaria and relations between the two countries." Tremonti gave a lecture in collaboration with the Cultural Center of the University of Sofia "St. Clement of Ohrid," directed by Associate Professor Daria Karapetkova, on two of his publications: "The Criminogenic State" and "War or Peace." The conference, held in the University's Aula Magna and attended by an audience of 150 students, academics, and entrepreneurs, opened with institutional greetings from Ambassador Apicella, the Rector of the University of Sofia, Prof. Georgi Valchev, Director Karapetkova, and the President of Confindustria Bulgaria, Nunziante Coraggio. Finally, Tremonti, accompanied by a delegation composed of representatives of the Embassy and Confindustria Bulgaria, paid a courtesy visit to the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Yordanka Fandakova, at the Bulgarian National Assembly. During the cordial meeting, the two presidents noted the excellent level of bilateral relations, reviewing the numerous areas of cooperation and highlighting the importance of the contribution that Italy, the 'Framework Nation' of the NATO Multinational Battlegroup in Novo Selo, makes to Bulgarian and regional security.
