(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 16 - Italy has already registered its best-ever showing at a Winter Olympics, thanks in no small part to Alpine skiing star Federica Brignone winning the women's giant slalom at Milano Cortina 2026 on Sunday, three days after taking gold in the SuperG. She became the first Italian woman Alpine skier to win two golds at the same Olympics less than a year after suffering a career-threatening leg break in April. Indeed, Brignone said she was in a relaxed frame of mind for races as just being fit to compete was a huge achievement. Her giant slalom victory was one of four medals Italy won on Sunday, to take the overall tally up to a record 22, two more than the previous best showing set at Lillehammer in 1994. Lisa Vittozzi triumphed on the women's 10km pursuit to take the Azzurri's number of gold medals up to eight. Also on Sunday Michela Moioli and Lorenzo Sommariva took silver in the mixed team snowboard cross event and the men's team took bronze in the 4 x 7.5km cross-country skiing relay. (ANSA).
