Parolin says 'perplexed' about Board of Peace

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 17 - (refiling corrected) Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said Tuesday the Holy See was perplexed about United States President Donald Trump's Board of Peace for Gaza and would not be joining it, not even as an observer like Italy. Leaving Palazzo Borromeo after his bilateral meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the occasion of the anniversary of the 1929 Lateran Treaty of mutual recognition and its 1985 update dropping Catholicism as sole state religion, Parolin said: "The Vatican will not participate in the Board of Peace for Gaza. We also noted that Italy will participate as an observer. Evidently, there are points that leave us perplexed, critical issues that need to be explained. The important thing is that we are trying to provide an answer, but for us, there are critical issues that need to be resolved." The Secretary of State also identified one of the "critical issues" that the Vatican believes should be resolved, namely the role of the United Nations in international crises: "One concern," Parolin explained, "is that at the international level, it is primarily the UN that manages these crises."
