Marseille 1940: A Haven and Trap for European Culture Against Nazism
During the Nazi occupation of France, Marseille served as both a refuge and a trap for intellectuals like Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, and Marc Chagall. American journalist Varian Fry organized a clandestine network there, saving approximately 2,000 people.
