Ný skýrsla OECD um samfélagsleg og efnahagsleg áhrif ósmitbærra sjúkdóma sýnir að þeir hafa veruleg áhrif á heilsu, lífsgæði og hagkerfi aðildarríkja. Samkvæmt henni er gert ráð fyrir að tilfellum slíkra sjúkdóma fjölgi um 31% á næstu 25 árum eingöngu vegna öldrunar.
