Bernini's Elephant vandalised
(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 18 - Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini's iconic statue of an elephant in the centre of Rome was damaged Monday night, art officials said Tuesday. Elephant and Obelisk was unveiled in 1667 in the Piazza della Minerva in Rome, adjacent to the church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. One of the animal's tusks was broken, officials said. The monument is one of the best-loved works of statuary in the Italian capital. "It is unacceptable that the nation's artistic and cultural heritage should once again suffer such grave damage. Just days before the inauguration of the major exhibition on Gian Lorenzo Bernini at the Galleria d'Arte Antica in Palazzo Barberini, his Elephant in Piazza della Minerva was targeted," said Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli. "The Ministry of Culture, through the Special Superintendency of Rome, responsible for the high-level surveillance of artistic heritage," he continued, "will provide its contribution to the Capitoline Superintendency, which oversees the monument, for the restoration of the sculpture: one of the most significant symbols of the capital, struck by an absurd act of barbarity."
