Irish Doctors Discover First EU Case of Antibiotic-Resistant Shigella 'Superbug'

Doctors in Ireland have identified the first case within the European Union of a gastrointestinal "superbug" (shigella) carrying a gene resistant to antibiotics. This newly discovered strain may prove difficult to treat with existing strong medicines.
