China’s green energy leader Inner Mongolia starts work on new ‘flexible’ power plants

The Chinese region of Inner Mongolia expects to start work this year on two new “flexible” power plants mixing coal and green energy. The plants, which will provide power to the eastern economic hubs of Shanghai and Jiangsu province, mark a major strategic shift in the use of coal because it will now be used to plug gaps in the power generated by wind and solar energy rather than being the primary source of energy. Inner Mongolia is home to around a quarter of China’s coal reserves but has also...

'Italian-style' urban regeneration exhibition opens in Karachi

(ANSA) - ISLAMABAD, 13 FEB - The traveling exhibition 'Cities on Stage. Urban Regeneration: the Italian way to a sustainable future' opened in Karachi yesterday, Feb. 12, highlighting the Italian approach to sustainable urban transformation and presenting best practices to an international audience. Organized by the Consulate of Italy in Karachi at the Quaid and Azam Flag Staff House, a historic residence linked to Pakistan's founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the exhibition is part of a global initiative to showcase the Italian experience in urban redevelopment. According to organizers, the exhibition "brings abroad, around the world, the experiences of urban regeneration in Italy, collected by the Festival Città in Scena." "Recent years in Italy have been characterized by a great and widespread attention to urban regeneration processes," driven also by European and national funding aimed at managing environmental, energy and social transitions while limiting land consumption. The initiative highlights how regeneration projects have focused on "recovering abandoned spaces and buildings, both in the suburbs and in historic centers, redirecting them toward new functions related to the needs of local communities." The organizers said the exhibition had "a twofold objective: on the one hand, to give an account of this extraordinary design and construction vitality present in our country and which is significantly transforming Italian cities from north to south; on the other, to illustrate, through a series of significant examples, the variety of solutions adopted." The program also included a presentation entitled 'Regeneration. The Italian Way to a Sustainable Future,' given by Marco D'Egidio, Senior Technology Officer of Ance, followed by a panel discussion with Pakistani academics, planners and sustainability experts, moderated by Italian Development Committee President Aarij Iqbal. The exhibition highlights Italy's commitment to sustainable construction, promoting "the skills and technologies in the design of urban spaces, buildings and housing of Italian public administrations, companies and designers." It also represents "a clear example of the new concept of construction and beyond, to be extended to all sectors, aimed at saving raw materials but above all at the use and recovery of materials already used," supporting "a cleaner world that does not produce or at least limits waste and waste materials." The Karachi exhibition is part of an international tour supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, with the aim of strengthening cultural exchanges and promoting sustainable urban development around the world.
