Italy finances the restoration of the ancient walls of Cartagena
(ANSA) - CARTAGENA DE INDIAS, 17 FEB - The municipality of Cartagena de Indias has launched a public consultation to gather proposals and comments from citizens on the restoration of the ancient walls and ramparts of the historic center of the Colombian city, as part of a cooperation project supported by Italy with an investment of €3 million. "Cartagena de Indias is more than just a heritage site and an attraction, it is an opportunity to generate sustainable development and social inclusion," said the Italian ambassador to Colombia, Giancarlo Maria Curcio. "The Italian government considers the participation of citizens, whether through initiative, interest, or engineering, historical, or architectural expertise, to be fundamental and highly relevant in order to propose projects, ideas, and priorities related to heritage interventions," the city council specified.
The initiative involves interventions on the Espigón de La Tenaza, the Murallita del Diablo, and the ramparts of San Ignacio and San Francisco Javier, with the construction of pedestrian paths and elevated walkways. Maintenance work is also planned for the Cathedral of Santa Catalina de Alejandría and the Baluarte de Santo Domingo, as well as the training of 3,600 people in the tourism and heritage sectors, with the support of the Polytechnic University of Turin.
