Man dead after landslide hits homes near Rome after torrential rain

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 13 -A 58-year-old man is dead after a landslide hit a three-story apartment building in the area of Formello, near Rome, sources said on Friday. The building was hit by a chunk of a nearby cliff that broke away following days of torrential rain, the sources said. Two other residents of the building were hurt and taken to hospital, although their injuries were not said to be serious, according to the sources. The storms and torrential rain continued in southern Italy on Friday and several families were cut off from the outside world in the province of Cosenza after the Busento and Campagnano rivers burst their banks, causing major flooding. Scientists say the climate crisis caused by human greenhouse gas emissions is making extreme weather events such as heatwaves, droughts, supercharged storms and flooding more frequent and more intense.
