Berlin also calls for Albanese resignation, 'position untenable'

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 12 - Germany on Thursday joined France in calling for the resignation of United Nations Special Rapporteur for the Palestinian Territories Francesca Albanese of Italy after she called Israel "a common enemy of humanity" in an allegedly antisemitic comment to Al Jazeera that allegedly targeted the Israeli people and nation as such in her latest condemnation of the alleged genocide in Gaza. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for her resignation following the statements she made at an Al Jazerra conference last week. "I respect the UN system based on independent rapporteurs. However, Albanese has made numerous inappropriate statements in the past. I condemn her recent statements on Israel. Her position is untenable," Wadephul wrote on X. His French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, had called for Albanese's resignation on Wednesday, and Italian Jews and Premier Giorgia Meloni's right-wing ruling Brothers of Italy (FdI) party and its government partner the right-wing League party backed the quit call.
