U svetu je registrovano više od 6.000 retkih bolesti koje zajedno pogađaju oko pet odsto globalne populacije. Iako se svaka od njih javlja retko, u zbiru predstavljaju ozbiljan javnozdravstveni problem. Procene pokazuju da u Srbiji više od 350.000 ljudi živi sa nekom od retkih dijagnoza.
