15th-Century Chinese Surgeons Used Poisonous Aconite as Anesthetic

Chinese doctors in the 1400s reportedly used the highly toxic plant aconite, also known as monkshood, as an anesthetic to relieve pain during surgical procedures. The plant, which is also found in Finnish gardens, is known for its dangerous poisonous properties.
