Musumeci says cabinet OKs over €1 billion for cyclone and Niscemi
(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 18 - Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said Wednesday the cabinet had approved over one nillion euros for the damage caused to southern Italy by Cyclone Harry including the Sicilian town of Niscemi, much of which slipped into the valley due to a rain-induced landslide.
Over €1.1 billion—after the initial €100 million already allocated—for the cyclone damage in Sicily, Sardinia, and Calabria, and €150 million for the Niscemi landslide, was approved by ministers, said Musumeci. The governors of the three affected regions, as designated commissioners, will arrange for the necessary interventions to support families and businesses affected by the violent storm surges and the wave of severe weather in inland areas, and to restore damaged infrastructure.
For the Niscemi landslide, however, a different approach was taken, with the appointment of a special commissioner, Fabio Ciciliano, head of the Civil Protection Department. (ANSA).
