France has honored the late scholar, Resistance fighter, soldier, and historian Marc Bloch by inducting him into the Panthéon. President Macron paid tribute to Bloch in a politically charged ceremony.

The French president remembered the historian as a 'man of the Enlightenment.' After the Nazis occupied France, Bloch joined the French Resistance in 1943. Arrested in 1944, he was tortured under the authority of the Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie. On June 16, 1944, Bloch was executed by the Nazis, crying out 'Vive la France!' as he was shot.

French Resistance fighter Marc Bloch, who was tortured and executed by the Gestapo in 1944, entered the Pantheon on Tuesday, becoming the first historian to receive the honour bestowed on exceptional figures in politics, culture and science. French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute the historian of Jewish heritage and "his teachings that compel us to move forward, against the spirit of defeatism".
