Štrpci se nalaze uz samu granicu sa Republikom Srbijom, na trasi željezničke pruge koja povezuje Beograd sa lukom Bar u Crnoj Gori. Ovaj dio teritorije Bosne i Hercegovine, početkom agresije na BIH, bio je u potpunosti okupiran od strane JNA, odnosno tzv. VRS.
