Sex first, dinner later: what can singles in Oslo, Berlin, Paris and Rome teach me about dating?

My fellow Brits seem weighed down by endless swiping – I went to the Europeans for a fresh perspective Last year, I went through a breakup and threw myself into internet dating. I started experimenting with mirror selfies, and spent whole evenings trying to take artful photographs of my own bum. I agonised over my three-line bio. I even put a notebook by my bed with the Hinge prompt “most spontaneous thing I’ve done” written on the first page, so if the answer came to me in a dream, I’d have ...

Judge acquits 29 over Acca Larentia Fascist salutes

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 20 - A Rome judge on Friday acquitted 29 people, almost all members of the far-right CasaPound group, for performing Fascist salutes in January 2024 at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the 1978 Acca Larentia killings in the Italian capital. Prosecutors had pressed charges against the 29 for breaching laws on apology of Fascism. But a preliminary hearings judge ruled the case should not proceed because of the lack of "a reasonable expectation of a conviction". The case regarded the 2024 commemoration although far-right activists make Fascist salutes every year at the annual event outside the former headquarters of the neo-Fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI) in Via Acca Larentia in Rome to commemorate the death of three far-right youth militants. Hundreds did so at the ceremony last month, with the customary cry "for all the fallen comrades" and the shout "present and correct". In the massacre on January 7, 1978, two members of MSI's youth wing Fronte della Gioventù, Franco Bigonzetti and Francesco Ciavatta, aged 18 and 19, were shot dead, allegedly by far-left militants, in via Acca Larentia, a street named after a Roman goddess. A third MSI youth wing member, Stefano Recchioni, 19, was fatally injured by a stray police bullet during ensuing clashes by members of the Fronte della Gioventù who rioted after the deaths, and police. Does the Premier League table get you down? Try one of our five alternatives

What if games ended at 90 minutes, set-pieces goals were scrapped, or shots that hit the woodwork counted? By Opta Analyst A league table is a pretty helpful barometer of each team’s fortunes. That’s why we use it to decide where teams finish at the end of the season. However, league tables do not tell us the whole story. Arsenal are top in reality (just about), but they might not be in all of our alternative Premier League tables. Continue reading...

The Guardian view on Merz and Meloni: an emerging Berlin-Rome axis is threatening the EU’s green deal

The deregulation agenda being pushed by Germany’s chancellor and Italy’s prime minister is economically and ethically flawed When the European Union launched its green deal in 2019, putting into law the goal of climate neutrality by the middle of the century, it showed strategic foresight as well as global leadership. Russia’s war in Ukraine has starkly underlined the extent to which the continent’s energy security – and its future prosperity – is dependent on the transition away from fossil fuels. Lately, however, EU leaders’ environmental approach appears to be echoing the youthful St Augustine’s plea on chastity: make us greener, but not yet. The recent European Industry Summit in Antwerp made unusually big headlines thanks to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s xenophobic outburst over immigration. But it was also notable for fierce attacks on one of the most important pillars of EU environmental policy. The bloc’s emissions trading system (ETS) – which makes polluters pay for the C02 they emit – has achieved dramatic results in driving down overall emissions since 2005 and encouraging green innovation. Worryingly, the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, appeared to sympathise with demands from Sir Jim and other CEOs for a radical relaxation of the rules. Continue reading...

Tajani defends Italy joining Board of Peace, says observers like EC

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 16 - Foreign MInister Antonio Tajani on Monday defended the government's decision to join United States President Donald Trump's Board of Peace stressing that Italy will just have observer status like the European Commission because the board's constitution clashes with the Italian one. Italy was invited to participate in the Board of Peace as an observer, he said during a press conference following a bilateral meeting with his Canadian counterpart Anita Anand., and deemed it "appropriate" to participate because "we want to be a protagonist, but as observers, as the European Commission will be." The observer status was chosen, he explained, "because Article 9 of the Board's Statute conflicts with the Constitution," which states that Rome can only take part in supranational bodies on a par with the other members. "We are doing this because we have already given a lot for Gaza and will continue to do so. We are among the countries in the world that have given the most," the minister said, explaining that "we are ready to train the new Gaza and Palestinian police, and we are ready to increase our Carabinieri in Rafah. "We have a direct interest in the stability of the Middle East," he added, "and in building peace." Trump's board is aimed at initially cementing peace and reconstruction in Gaza and then achieving peace in all other conflicts around the world. Critics have said the American president is trying to supplant the role of the United Nations. (ANSA). Read article...

Rio carnival parade honours President Lula, sparks criticism

A colossal metallic robot depicting Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva towered over Rio de Janeiro's famed Sambadrome avenue on Sunday night, in a Carnival parade that has drawn fire for its tribute to a sitting president in an election year. Samba school Academicos de Niteroi kicked off three days of dazzling parades with the homage to Lula, tracing his life as a boy growing up in poverty in the arid northeast, to a metalworker, union leader and then president. The opposition has slammed the parade as veiled early campaigning ahead of October polls in which the 80-year-old Lula is seeking a fourth term.

Red card for Juve's Kalulu was clear mistake says referees' chief

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 16 - Italy's referees selector Gianluca Rocchi has admitted that the decision to send off Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu for a second yellow card in his side's 3-2 defeat to Serie A leaders Inter at San Siro on Saturday was a clear mistake amid a massive furore over the decision. Kalulu was given a second booking by referee Federico La Penna for a foul on Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni, although TV replays showed that Bastoni dived. The Italy centre-back then went on to celebrate getting his opponent red-carded with his team mates to boot. The VAR was unable to do anything because the protocol does not allow it to intervene with second yellow cards, only direct red cards. "We are very sorry about this episode," Rocchi told ANSA via telephone on Sunday, "about La Penna's decision, which was clearly wrong, and about the fact that we were unable to use VAR to correct it. "La Penna is mortified and we are supportive of him. "But I have to tell you the truth - he is not the only one who made a mistake because yesterday there was a clear simulation. "It is latest in a long series in a championship in which they try in every way to screw us". Bastoni and his wife closed comments on their social media profiles after being hit by a wave of insults and threats following the incident. "Poor child that has a such a disgusting father," read one comment on a family photo posted on Instagram. "It'll be so beautiful when you die together with your children," said another. Saturday's victory keeps Inter eight points clear of second-placed AC Milan, who won 2-1 at Pisa on Friday and have a game in hand. Champions Napoli are third with 50 points, 11 behind Inter, and AS Roma are fourth with 47 after the two sides battled out a 2-2 draw in Naples on Sunday. Facing meltdown? Over 75% of people suffer from burnout - here’s what you need to know

Does it only affect weak people? Is work always the cause? Burnout myths, busted by the experts Once, after surviving yet another round of redundancies in a former job, I did something very odd. I turned off the lights in my room and lay face-down on the bed, unable to move. Rather than feeling relief at having escaped the axe, I was exhausted and numb. I’m not the only one. Fatigue, apathy and hopelessness are all textbook signs of burnout, a bleak phenomenon that has come to define many of our working lives. In 2025, a report from Moodle found that 66% of US workers had experienced some kind of burnout, while a Mental Health UK survey found that one in three adults came under high levels of pressure or stress in the previous year. Despite the prevalence of burnout, plenty of misconceptions around it persist. “Everybody thinks it’s some sort of disease or medical condition,” says Christina Maslach, the psychology professor who was the first to study the syndrome in the 1970s. “But it’s actually a response to chronic job stressors – a stress response.” Here we separate the facts from the myths. Govt will challenge Sea-Watch rulings says Piantedosi

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 20 - Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said Friday that the government would challenge two recent rulings against it and in favour of the German Sea-Watch migrant-rescue NGO. This week a court in Catania ordered the release of the NGO's Sea-Watch 5 migrant-rescue ship after the Italian authorities temporarily impounded it for allegedly breaching the rules for such operations, while judges in Palermo ordered the Italian State to pay 76,000 euros in compensation to it for illegally detaining another of its ships, the Sea Watch 3, in 2019. On Wednesday Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed indignation about the latter decision, saying it was an example of how elements within the judiciary are seeking to thwart the government's efforts to halt illegal immigration. "Up until now we have challenged these types of rulings, using the three-level judicial system (in Italy), and we will continue to do so," Piantedosi said at the opening of a new police office at Rome's central Termini train station. "We have challenged them whenever possible, so we will do the same in this case as well". (ANSA). Read article...

Lazio present project to renovate Rome's Stadio Flaminio

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 17 - Lazio on Tuesday presented their project to renovate Rome's Stadio Flaminio and make it the new home of the Serie A club. The complex has fallen into a state of neglect after the Italian national rugby team stopped using it for its Six Nations games following the 2011 tournament and moved to the larger Stadio Olimpico. "Today we're not simply presenting a building project, we're presenting a vision," said Lazio Chairman Claudio Lotito. "What we do today will impact future generations. "The redevelopment of the Stadio Flaminio isn't just about Lazio, it's about Rome, its urban history, and its ability to look to the future with responsibility". The club currently plays its home games at the Stadio Olimpico, which is owned by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI). AS Roma, who play at the Olimpico too, plan to build a totally new stadium in the Pietralata area of the capital. Lotito said Lazio have already presented a formal expression of interest in the renovated Stadio Flaminio hosting matches at Euro 2032, which Italy will co-host with Turkey. "It is an act of responsibility and vision to put Rome and the Stadio Flaminio in a position to participate in a major international event, should the technical and institutional requirements allow it," Lotito said. "We are aware that the venue selection process will be competitive and that our city is expected to field multiple candidates. "For this very reason, we want to address this issue methodically, transparently, and with planning. "The Stadio Flaminio was created for the 1960 Olympics. "Today, it can aspire, with balance and seriousness, to return to the circuit of major European events". Most of Lazio's season-ticket holders did not attend the club's last two home matches in protect at Lotito's running of the club and his failure to build a team capable of competing for the Serie A title or international trophies. They are currently ninth in the league table, 28 points behind leaders Inter. (ANSA). Read article...

Bastoni was wrong to dive but shouldn't lose his Italy place - Marotta

(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 16 - Inter Chairman Giuseppe Marotta said Monday that defender Alessandro Bastoni was wrong to take the dive that led to Juventus defender Pierre Kalulu getting a second yellow card in Saturday's match between the teams. But he also said that the media storm created by the case had gone too far and that Bastoni should not lose his place in the Italy squad. "Our position is very simple," Marotta told a press conference before a meeting of the Serie A league. "I'm here because we've noticed that the media has taken a truly over-the-top stance on what happened. "First and foremost, the player has been the target of media pile-on that goes beyond what actually happened. "A lad who is an asset for our national team made a mistake. "Some are even questioning whether he should be in the next call-ups for the national team, which is absolutely unfair". Serie A leaders Inter won the match 3-2- (see related). (ANSA). Read article...
